Courtship Sound Production in Two Sympatric Sibling Drosophila Species.
نویسنده
چکیده
Courting males of Drosophila persimilis produce a pulsed "vibration sound," with frequency of oscillation and pulse repetition rate markedly different from that of D. pseudoobscura. These differences probably contribute to reproductive isolation. Flight frequency is the same in both species. Brief "preliminary sounds" are common and the same in both species. Males with large parts of both wings removed produce nearly normal vibration sounds, and normal preliminary sounds.

The role of male courtship song in species recognition in Drosophila montana.
In many Drosophila species the male courtship song is an essential part of a successful courtship, playing a role in species-recognition and/or in sexual selection exercised by the females on conspecific males. In Drosophila montana, specific traits of the courtship song (the length and the carrier frequency of sound pulses) have earlier been shown to play an important role in intraspecific mat...
متن کاملPhylogenetic Relationships among DROSOPHILA LONGICORNIS, DROSOPHILA PROPACHUCA and DROSOPHILA PACHUCA, a Triad of Sibling Species.
Drosophila longicornis, D. propachuca and D. pachuca comprise a triad of sibling species. They are morphologically indistinguishable, sympatric forms that, under laboratory conditions, are capable of exchanging genes through the production of fertile F(1) females. However, we have no evidence for introgressive hybridization in nature. The chromosomal constitution of our strains indicates that t...
متن کاملTemperature Dependent Larval Pupation Site Preference in Drosophila
Temperature dependent larval pupation site preference in Drosophila. – Vandal N.B., Shivanna N. – The pupation site preferences (PSP) in sibling, sympatric and closely related species of Drosophila belonging to different groups were studied at different temperatures. The study has revealed that the pupation site choice varies significantly at extreme temperatures compared to the control one. Di...
متن کاملReproductive isolating mechanisms between two sympatric sibling species of sea snakes.
Mechanisms that maintain species isolation within sympatric congeners have attracted analysis in many kinds of organisms, but not in snakes. We studied two sibling species of amphibious sea snakes (Laticauda colubrina and L. frontalis) on the island of Efate, in the Pacific Ocean republic of Vanuatu. The two taxa are almost identical morphologically, except that L. colubrina grows much larger t...
متن کاملSound production during agonistic behavior of male Drosophila melanogaster.
Male Drosophila fruit flies acquire and defend territories in order to attract females for reproduction. Both, male-directed agonistic behavior and female-directed courtship consist of series of recurrent stereotypical components. Various studies demonstrated the importance of species-specific sound patterns generated by wing vibration as being critical for male courtship success. In this study...
